Bellator 106 main card live blog: Alvarez vs. Chandler 2, more


This is the Bellator 106 main card live blog for the Bellator 106 event at the Long Beach Arena in Long Beach, Calif.

There will be five fights on the Bellator 106 main card. Michael Chandler vs. Eddie Alvarez, King Mo Lawal vs. Emanuel Newton, Pat Curran vs. Daniel Straus, Joe Riggs vs. Mike Bronzoulis, and Mike Richman vs. Akop Stepanyan will be featured on SPIKE TV.

Mike Richman vs. Akop Stepanyan

Round 1: Herb Dean is the referee. Stepanyan throws a spinning back fist, but it's blocked. Good right hook finds the mark from the Armenian. Stepanyan staying active, but most of his shots are missing. Stepanyan's face is bleeding, but he's landing more and harder than the American. Two right hands score for Richman. Stepanyan clearly rocked, but returns the favor with a left hand that sends Stepanyan crashing to the mat. Richman follows up with a series of punches and the referee stops the fight.

Joe Riggs vs. Mike Bronzoulis

Round 1: 'Big' John McCarthy is the referee. Both fighters exchanging leg kicks, but nothing significant. Riggs lands a right that's not flush, but backs up Bronzoulis. Bronzoulis staying with the leg kicks and they're beginning to add up. Riggs catches a kick and uses it to score an outside trip. Bronzoulis tries to stand, but Riggs uses over-under control from the back to snatch Bronzoulis back down. Bronzoulis stands, but Riggs stays busy with hammerfists.

Round 2: Bronzoulis clinches with Riggs and is immediately tripped to the canvas. Bronzoulis manages to stand and eventually create separation. Left hand scores for Bronzoulis, but they're back to clinching. Bronzoulis scores a leg kick, but Riggs lands a nice outside trip and he passes guard almost immediately. Bronzoulis tries to scramble and again gets his back taken. Bronzoulis stands and is able to shuck Riggs over his back, Riggs now working from guard.

Round 3: Both fighters trade right hands, but then they're back to clinching. Riggs scoops Bronzoulis and drops him to the canvas opposite the fence. Bronzoulis tries to get to his base and again Riggs takes his back. Bronzoulis is basically helpless here as Riggs maintains back control, but Riggs isn't exactly threatening with any submissions. Bronzoulis is now standing, but Riggs is still all over his back. Bronzoulis is able to reverse, but Riggs gets back to his feet.

Pat Curran vs. Daniel Straus

Round 1: Jason Herzog is the referee. Curran nearly connects with a right, but Straus returns with an inside leg kick. Straus dives for a double and gets it. Curran stands and separates. Left straight connects for Straus. Straus lands a body kick and a left hook. Straus connects with another inside leg kick, but eats a groin kick inadvertently. The bout resumes after a brief halt. Straus secures a double against the fence, but Curran stands.

Round 2: Curran starting to connect on Straus and stuffs a takedown to start the frame. Left hook connects on Straus from the champion. Good left straight from Straus finds the mark. Good body kick now from Straus. Two hard body shots from Curran. Another middle kick from Straus and the fighters trade leg kicks. Over the top elbow from Curran finds the mark plus a left uppercut and Straus counters.

Round 3: One-two combo lands for Straus. Inside leg kick from Curran trips Straus to the floor, but he's back up. Good left straight from Straus and he's in on a double attempt against the fence. Straus attempts a hip throw and gets it, but it's against the fence, so Curran is back on his feet and pressing Straus into the cage for a takedown. Straus hits another throw, but eats an illegal knee from Curran. The bout is temporarily halted. Jason Herzog takes a point from Curran. The bout resumes. Straus scores a takedown and passes guard. Curran gets back to his base and rolls through to recapture guard.

Round 4: Straus uses the clinch again to whip Curran over and press him against the fence. He also secures a scoop double against the fence, but Curran stands. Straus lifts Curran and dumps him back on the mat. Now he's pressing Curran into the fence from Curran's guard. Straus threatening with top side elbows and pressure passing against the cage. Curran is badly cut on his scalp.

Round 5: Good one-two from Straus. Right hook scores for Curran, but not a lot on it. Straus connects with a series of punches after a thundering left hand the champion is reeling. He survives and they two clinch along the fence. Straus attempts another throw, but Curran stuffs it. Curran now pressing Straus into the fence. He almost secures a single, but Straus reverses him

Daniel Straus def. Pat Curran via unanimous decision (49-45, 48-46, 48-46)


Muhammed Lawal vs. Emanuel Newton

Round 1: Herb Dean is the referee. Lawal in on a single, then transitions to a double and it scores. Lawal with a few punches as Newton tries to stand and separate. Newton trying over and over to stand and is eating a ton of small shots. He eventually gets back to his feet and lands a small kick to the groin, but the bout is re-started. Newton throws a spinning back fist and is taken to the mat with a well-timed takedown from Lawal. Newton is able to stand again.

Round 2: Good one-two for Mo to start the frame. Newton misses with a spinning back kick, but lands a body kick. Lawal reaches for a single and presses Newton into the fence. Lawal spikes Newton to the mat and is now working from Newton's open guard. Newton is able to stand, but Lawal eats the end of a kick and is visibly hurt. Newton tries to follow up and can't finish him. They're back to exchanging in the middle of the cage. Lawal throws a body shot and eats a right hand.

Round 3: Good left hook by Lawal to start the frame. Newton tries to crack with an overhand, but doesn't land it cleanly. Lawal doing all the stalking and pumping the jab, but scores with a body shot. Lawal eats a fleeting right hand. Lawal with another body shot. Lawal fails on a takedown and misses with a wide punch.

Round 4: Newton scores with a body kick and then a spinning back kick. Right hand for Lawal scores. Lawal leaps in for a series of punches, but can't score. Lawal ducks a spinning back fist and times a takedown, but can't get it. Tries it again and still can't get it. Lawal presses for a double against the fence and it works. Newton stands, however. Lawal stalking and scores with a jab, but can't do much else with it.

Round 5: Lawal back to pressuring and scores a nice, hard right hand. Newton misses with several overhand right attempts. Lawal nicely times a takedown attempt, but can't get it. Newton mostly missing with his spinning strikes now. Lawal presses forward with strikes, but also mostly misses. Decent overhand right from Lawal. Lawal in on a single leg and gets it against the cage. After a bit of struggle, Newton stands. He tries to take Lawal down, but can't.

Emanuel Newton def. Muhammed Lawal via unanimous decision (49-46, 49-46, 49-46)

Michael Chandler vs. Eddie Alvarez

Round 1: 'Big' John McCarthy is your referee. Both fighters trading big shots early with Chandler stalking. Good right hand from Alvarez. Alvarez in on a single and it's easily stuffed by Chandler and a good jab. Hard right hand by Chandler and a left. Alvarez with a counter left, but Chandler cracks him with a right. Good left by Alvarez and Chandler respects. Chandler gets a huge takedown and takes Alvarez's back. He nearly stops the fight with a rear naked choke, but Alvarez survives and gets back to his feet.
