The Not-So-Sunny Side of This Hot Energy Source

Solar power, for good reason, has a lot of fans. ?It's hip, it's cool, it's trendy...and it's green,? according to the Australian solar company Energy Matters. And it?s certainly true that producing solar power is far cleaner than fossil fuels which are one of the main causes of pollution and global warming.

But like every good hero, the solar industry has its kryptonite. In this case, it?s the hazardous waste that?s created by the production of solar panels.

ABC News recently reported that while government incentives have been a boon to the solar industry, the millions of panels being manufactured are also producing millions of pounds of polluted sludge and contaminated water. ?In many cases, a toxic sludge is created when metals and other toxins are removed from water used in the manufacturing process. If a company doesn't have its own treatment equipment, then it will send contaminated water to be stored at an approved dump.?

Putting aside the idea of transporting a lot of toxic sludge from one place to another?most plants don?t have on-site treatment equipment?a number of scientists have pointed out that the transport of solar waste isn?t being factored into the product?s carbon footprint score, which measures the amount of greenhouse gases produced during a product?s manufacturing.

Dustin Mulvaney, an assistant professor of environmental studies at San Jos? State University, told TakePart that he?s been doing life cycle analyses and carbon footprints of energy technologies since he was a postdoctoral scholar at the University of California, Berkeley, after which he started a sustainability consulting firm, EcoShift. ?My particular interest in solar came through work with the Silicon Valley Toxics Coalition,? he said.

?Approximating the greenhouse gas emissions associated with any product requires gathering information about direct energy use, embodied energy?the energy it takes to make some of the key inputs and infrastructure?and the carbon intensity of the various energy inputs,? said Mulvaney. ?Coal, for example, has a higher carbon intensity than natural gas.??

Asked if knowing more about the hazardous waste created by the solar industry might influence consumers even though solar power is still a cleaner option than fossil fuels, Mulvaney said, ?Solar power is an order of magnitude cleaner than coal and fracked natural gas.?

And, ?If consumers know more about the hazardous waste emissions associated with solar manufacturing, there could be pressure on companies to reduce their emissions or seek onsite treatment options where opportunities exist. More efficient use of chemicals ultimately could reduce the carbon footprint of solar as well as reduce manufacturing costs, which is the primary obstacle to more widespread photovoltaics adoption.?

SolarPowerIsTheFuture.com states that, ?The sun is the world's largest power plant. It provides more energy to the earth in one hour than that produced by all nations in a year.?

We just need to make sure that the journey from the sun to a solar-powered home remains as clean as possible.

Are you surprised to hear about the hazardous waste and carbon footprint created by solar panel production?

PFT: Jets LB Thomas enters intervention program

Bruton SmithAP

Panthers owner Jerry Richardson has struck a deal to keep his team in Charlotte for 15 years in exchange for public money, and has already prepared to have the team sold within two years of his death.

But if he wanted to divest now, he apparently has an option.

Bruton Smith, a billionaire NASCAR track owner based out of Charlotte, just made a magnanimous if more than a little self-serving gesture during an appearance on local radio.

During an appearance with WBT-AM?s Keith Larson, Smith referenced Richardson?s will stating the team would be sold within two years of his passing, then said: ?Why two years? Why not two months??

?Do you think he?s interested in selling?? Smith asked the host. ?I have not approached him. If the price is right, yeah, I?d be interested.?

Smith, who will turn 86 in March, also said he ?would commit to the city, and I would not ask them for any money. . . .

?Maybe Mr. Richardson had just as soon sell it today as commit to selling it two years after his passing. I don?t know. That could happen, don?t you think??

Smith, the owner of Sonic Automotive, and Speedway Motorsports Inc., owns a number of NASCAR tracks. But he threatened to move the one nearest Charlotte in a spat with government officials over tax subsidies, among other rows over tax dollars. The exit off Interstate 85 to get to his facility is now known as ?Bruton Smith Boulevard.?

He?s also a skilled promoter, and knows how to pick a fight and stir a pot.

Whether he?s serious about buying his local NFL franchise remains to be seen, but Smith has clearly taken a swipe at Richardson after last week?s deal to accept more than $200 million of state and local assistance to upgrade Bank of America Stadium.

Just 4 dogs advance in Westminster's best in show

Swagger, an Old English Sheepdog, wins the herding group at Westminster (Mike Segar/Reuters)

NEW YORK?Hundreds of dogs competed, but just four made the cut on day one of the prestigious Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show on Monday.

An American foxhound, an affenpinscher, a bichon frise and an old English sheepdog all won their respective dog groups on day one at Westminster, a show that is considered the Super Bowl of the dog world. The four will face the winners of the sporting, working and terrier groups in Tuesday?s best-in-show finals.

Jewel, a stoic American foxhound from Baltimore, won the hound group just a year after she made her Westminster debut. While Jewel won her breed at 2012?s show, her owner, Lisa Miller, said she wasn't ready when she competed last year.

?She had a year to learn how to be a really good show dog,? Miller said, as Jewel sniffed at a mob of reporters surrounding the championship podium. ?She had confidence last year, but she was a little more confident this year and had more style? She strutted in here, like, ?Look at me!??

Banana Joe, an affenpinscher that looked like a tiny black storm cloud with lips, bested crowd favorites like the Pekingese to win Westminster?s toy group. As he stutted up to the podium to pose for photos, he was surrounded by his owners and a large entourage, including a groomer who cried as he combed out the tiny dog?s fluff of fur for his championship photo.

Ernesto Lara, his handler, explained Westminster would be Banana Joe?s last show. After Tuesday night?s show, he will retire. ?This is his swan song,? Lara said, his voice thick with emotion. He clutched the tiny dog in a tight embrace.

?He is surrounded by love,? Lara added. ?He has just wonderful charisma. I?ve been lucky to have him in my life.?

A fluffy bichon frise named Honor captured the non-sporting dog category. He was accompanied to the podium by his handler, Lisa Bettis, who laughed when she was asked to talk about the dog, who looked like a cotton ball with eyes.

?He likes to steal my strawberry milk,? said Bettis, who wore a tiny gold necklace featuring tiny Bichons Frises. ?He just dunks his whole face in the glass.?

Swagger, a shaggy old English sheepdog, won Westminster?s herding dog category?a surprise win that stunned many of the dog fanciers in the crowd. While virtually every other dog in the category entered the race as a certified champion in their breed, Swagger was competing in just his fourth show and had no previous titles.

Perched on the podium, dozens of photographers chirped and barked and kissed trying to get Swagger?s attention toward their cameras. His handler, Colton Johnson, pointed out that the dog?s official show name is actually ?Picture Perfect.?

?He is just the best,? Johnson said, beaming.

Competition resumes Tuesday morning with judging in breeds including Irish terriers, Saint Bernards and Doberman Pinschers. On Tuesday night, the dogs will return to Madison Square Garden for the finals and best-in-show.

Pope Benedict XVI announced Monday that he will resign on Feb. 28. The 85-year-old pope announced his decision in Latin during a meeting of Vatican cardinals. "After having repeatedly examined my conscience before God, I have come to the certainty that my strengths due to an advanced age are no longer suited to an adequate exercise of the Petrine ministry," he told the cardinals. Benedict, the first pontiff to resign in nearly 600 years, emphasized that carrying out the duties of being pope ? the leader of more than a billion Roman Catholics worldwide ? requires "both strength of mind and body." He says he is simply too infirm to carry on.

Here's a look at Pope Benedict XVI's career in a chronological photo package.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) ? This time, the lights stayed on in the Superdome.

The glitzy Mardi Gras Krewe of Endymion rolled its parade and super float through the Superdome on Saturday night and Kelly Clarkson performed amid purple, green and gold lights in the first major event at the venue since the Super Bowl blackout.

While the black tie ball was nowhere near the size of the championship game a week ago, it was a test for dome officials and the stadium's electricity provider, Entergy, which has come under scrutiny since the lights went dark for more than a half hour.

The bright stadium lights were dimmed for the ball, but there were no signs of any electrical problems.

Darin Coker and his wife, Jeannine, wondered whether the ball would be affected in any way after the outage.

"I got my dress six months ago," she said. "I was hoping they would get it fixed before tonight, and I was glad to hear they did."

The couple, both former New Orleans residents, drove in for the weekend from their home in Ruston, La., to attend the ball and catch other parades with friends and family. Darin Coker said he loved the sight of the dome's exterior, all aglow in purple, green and gold lights ? traditional colors of Mardi Gras ? and hoped outsiders wouldn't see the blackout as a black eye for a city still recovering from Hurricane Katrina.

"I was watching the game from home, and I was like, oh no, we were doing so good. The city looked so good," he said. "The city has come so far, and I hate to hear people say, 'Oh look at them, they just can't get it together.'"

Entergy said the blackout appeared to have been caused by a problem with a device the company installed to prevent power outages. It's still unclear whether the device had a design flaw or a manufacturing defect, causing an outage to about half of the stadium during the NFL's championship game between the Baltimore Ravens and San Francisco 49ers.

Entergy removed the equipment that failed, "and we're looking forward to hosting the Endymion ball," said Eric Eagan, spokesman for the Superdome.

The dome looked much different than a week ago, set up for a crowd of more than 30,000. The turf was covered with a floor and tables were set up where the field usually is.

The only hiccup Saturday occurred when the Endymion float had trouble negotiating a turn along its parade route on the way to the dome. The 330-foot float ? the largest-ever for Mardi Gras ? had to be separated and then re-attached to resume its journey.

The parade has 25 floats that roll through the dome, as revelers aboard them toss beads and trinkets to ball attendees gathered at tables and lower-level stadium seats.

Clarkson, the first winner of TV's "American Idol," was the parade's celebrity grand marshal. Her hits include "Because of You" and "Since You've Been Gone." She is one of several stars serving as celebrity riders in this year's Carnival parades.

On Sunday, actor G.W. Bailey of TNT's "Major Crimes" and the "Police Academy" movies is scheduled to reign as the king of the Bacchus parade.

On Monday, actor Gary Sinise and New Orleans musicians Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews and Harry Connick Jr. will ride in the Krewe of Orpheus parade with Emmy- and Golden Globe-winning actress Mariska Hargitay.
