The Best Presentations App for Windows [Windows App Directory]

The Best Presentations App for WindowsWindows users don't have a ton of choices when it comes to making presentations, but the well-known PowerPoint has all the features you need for putting together a great presentation.

The Best Presentations App for Windows

  • Create attractive presentations instantly using a number of pre-built themes
  • Create 2D and 3D charts
  • Add dynamic 3D slide transitions and realistic animation effects
  • Embed images and videos in your presentations, even remote ones?like videos from YouTube
  • Edit images and videos right from PowerPoint
  • Compress media inside your presentation for smaller file size
  • Create a video of your presentation for broadcast to anyone, anywhere, even if they don't have PowerPoint installed.
  • Collaborate with others on the same presentation in real time even from different locations.

The Best Presentations App for Windows

PowerPoint is simply the most feature-filled presentation app out there for Windows. Most others don't even come close, what with its built-in photo editing, media compression, and collaboration features which allow you to work on your project from anywhere. It also makes the most attractive presentations of any of its competitors, which is important when you need to make a splash with your presentation. And, with the foundation of Microsoft Office, it's pretty easy to add charts from Microsoft Excel rather than try to create them in some unknown program. It's not necessarily that PowerPoint is amazing, it's just that no other Windows counterpart comes close.

The Best Presentations App for Windows

As with all Microsoft Office programs, you have to deal with the $120 price tag and painful installation that comes with a program like PowerPoint. It could also be faster, but at this point, it's no slower than the competition, so it's hard to complain. Similarly, while its photo and video editing tools could be more advanced, it's hard to expect them to be as advanced as dedicated photo and video editing tools. If you have a lot of editing to do, you won't be able to do it with PowerPoint, but for more basic video trimming and image adjustments, it's nice to not have to open up another program.

The Best Presentations App for Windows

As always the main competition for Microsoft Office is the free LibreOffice Impress. LibreOffice's big advantage is that you don't need to pay, and while your presentations will not be nearly as good-looking or easy to craft as they would in PowerPoint, if you rarely create them, it's easier to justify a $0 cost. Also keep in mind that while LibreOffice can open PowerPoint files, it rarely does it perfectly, so if you're looking for compatibility you're best off getting the real deal.

Your other free choice is Google Docs. Again, it isn't nearly as advanced as PowerPoint, but it does have advantages. Its collaboration features, for instance, are much easier to use than PowerPoint's. You don't need a Windows Live or SharePoint account; you just jump in and start editing with your Google account. It also has very easy video embedding from things like YouTube. It is, however, more basic, and you don't have quite as many themes to choose from (not to mention the complete lack of transitions). Still, for simple presentations on which collaboration is necessary, it could be worth a look.

We didn't find very many presentation apps beyond the staple office suites, so if you know of a hidden gem that's worth a look, be sure to let us know in the comments.

The New York Post says 39-year-old Meredith Graves was visiting the memorial at the World Trade Center site on Dec. 22 and noticed a sign that said "No guns allowed." The Post reports that Graves asked police where she could check her loaded pistol. She was arrested on a gun-possession charge.

Graves has a legal permit to carry a weapon in Tennessee, but New York's gun laws are stricter.

The Post says Graves posted bond and is due back in court March 19. She faces 3? years in prison if convicted.

Tuesday 27th December, 2011 (IANS)

Heavy artillery should be removed from the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir, Pakistan has suggested to India during the two-day talks being held in Islamabad on conventional and nuclear confidence building measures (CBMs), a media report said Tuesday.

After a gap of four years, Pakistan and India Monday held talks on conventional CBMs, while discussions on nuclear CBMs were held Tuesday.

The talks are the first formal engagement since Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani met his Indian counterpart Manmohan Singh in the Maldives at the SAARC summit meeting early in November.

The Wall Street Journal reported that Pakistan made the proposal on removing heavy artillery Monday.

Islamabad suggested that artillery of greater than 120 mm be moved 30 km from the LoC. The LoC divides Jammu and Kashmir between India and Pakistan.

The expert-level meeting on nuclear and conventional CBMs is being held after a gap of four years.

Y.K. Sinha, joint secretary in charge of Pakistan desk in India's external affairs ministry, is leading the Indian side at the talks on conventional CBMs. The talks on nuclear CBMs were led by Venkatesh Verma, joint secretary in charge of disarmament in India's external affairs ministry.

Munawar Saeed Bhatti, additional secretary in Pakistan's ministry of foreign affairs, heads the Pakistan delegation for both expert groups.

Pakistan and India resumed in February early this year their dialogue process that was stalled after the Nov 26, 2008 Mumbai terror attack perpetrated by Pakistani terrorists.

The statement on sineadoconnor.com says "the marriage was 16 days. We lived together for 7 days only.. Until Xmas eve."

The statement says "from the moment myself and my husband got together ... there was intense pressure placed upon him by certain people in his life, not to be involved with me."

She adds: "As my good friend said `well, at least you got married in Vegas in a pink Cadillac! Can't get more Rock n Roll than that.'"

Roman Szendrey, who maintains the site, told The Associated Press by phone Wednesday the report is accurate and was personally posted by O'Connor.

Sun Prairie's Lee Brekke Part Of 2011 National Champion Warhawk Football Team

The Sun Prairie Star reports on a local athlete who is part of the champioship football team at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.

"It was a sight you don?t see very often ? the University of Wisconsin ? Whitewater Warhawk football team being held to only three points in a half. That, however, is exactly what happened in the 39th Annual Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl on Friday, Dec. 16 in Salem, Va. Then again, it?s not often rival powerhouse Mount Union has a scoreless half."

Mexican army: Ally's arrest is blow to 'El Chapo' (AP)

MEXICO CITY ? Mexican authorities said Monday that they had dealt a blow to the country's most powerful drug cartel with the capture of a top lieutenant ? but didn't say if they were any closer to capturing the gang's elusive leader.

Felipe Cabrera Sarabia, known as "The Engineer," allegedly ran operations for the Sinaloa drug cartel, Mexico's most powerful, in the northern state of Durango and in part of the northern state of Chihuahua, Chief Army spokesman Gen. Ricardo Trevilla told a news conference. Cabrera, wearing a bulletproof vest, was paraded before the news media in what has become a common practice for law enforcement authorities following major arrests.

Many experts and law-enforcement officials believe the reputed leader of the Sinaloa cartel, Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, has been hiding in the mountains of Durango. Authorities say Guzman is Mexico's top drug lord, while Forbes magazine has included him on its list of the world's richest men, reportedly worth more than $1 billion. He has eluded authorities since his 2001 escape from prison in a laundry truck, and has a $7 million bounty on his head. Trevilla offered no information about the hunt for Guzman. He only said that Cabrera's capture "will affect the structure and leadership of the Sinaloa cartel."

At the time of Cabrera's arrest, army special forces also seized documents and computer equipment, he said.

Cabrera was nabbed without a shot being fired Friday in the capital of Sinaloa state, headquarters of the cartel, army officials first announced Sunday night.

He will be held for at least 40 days on suspicion of participating in organized crime and drug trafficking. Mexican law allows organized-crime suspects to be held that long before prosecutors bring formal charges before a judge.

Trevilla said Cabrera and three of his brothers began as marijuana growers and that Cabrera rose through the Sinaloa ranks by using violence against his rivals.

In recent months, Cabrera waged war against a rival faction of the Sinaloa cartel known as the "Ms", leading to a surge in violence around Durango, he said.

Federal forces have found 14 mass graves containing 287 bodies in Durango state since April.

As GOP candidates vie for Bush backing, Jeb hangs back

George W. says he won?t be throwing his weight behind anyone in the Republican presidential nominating fight, although someone close to the former president said he has taken calls from a few candidates and dispensed only ?very generic? advice when asked.

Which leaves Jeb. Sr. ? the elusive endorsement that seems most coveted by the candidates.

The current presidential election cycle is the first since 1976 to be taking place without a Bush in a statewide or national office or seeking a national office. Yet the Bush family primary ? a behind-the-scenes drama that has been playing out in the GOP contest for months ? is taking on as much significance as ever.

To win an endorsement even from the most obscure of the Bushes ? George W. siblings Marvin and Doro have backed Romney ? is to share in a political brand that bestows legitimacy and open doors.

Much of the family?s vaunted fundraising network is either holding back or dispersing itself among various campaigns, depleting its influence as a singular force to pick a winner. So the major candidates are left to jockey for the next best thing: personal support.

Dynastic boost

Many Americans may see the Bushes as a relic of political history, a dynasty that boasted two former presidents and a former big-state governor but lost its luster when W. left the White House with rock-bottom approval ratings amid an economic collapse.

Even among some hard-core conservatives, the name evokes bad memories, such as the 1990 tax deal in which Bush 41 broke his ?read my lips? tax pledge, or the costly 2003 Medicare prescription drug legislation pushed by Bush 43 and cited by tea party activists as an example of Republicans losing their way.

Yet to Republicans who aspire to retake the White House and the legions of party activists who have worked for a Bush at one point or another, the family remains a symbol of political success.

And the dynasty?s imprimatur, like the Kennedy family backing (ultimately secured by Barack Obama) that was courted during the 2008 Democratic primary, brings clear advantages.

Four decades of politicking ? dating from George H.W. and Barbara Bush?s meticulous file card system to catalogue names and addresses ? has spawned the GOP?s most extensive network of activists and supporters still loyal to a single family.

?There are so many innumerable donors, activists, fundraisers and volunteers who have done so much to help George H.W. Bush, George W. Bush and Jeb Bush get elected,? said Florida-based lawyer Justin Sayfie, a former Jeb Bush aide who was a top bundler for George W. Bush and now backs Romney. ?There?s a long-standing loyalty factor among Republicans.?

Bush loyalists said the family has maintained its political networks. But in 2008 and now in 2012, the Bushes have refrained from directing donors to help certain White House contenders.

?They respected our right to make our own choices,? said Dirk Van Dongen, president of the National Association of Wholesaler-Distributors, who raised money for 41 and 43 and is helping Perry.

Japan emperor praises nation for tackling disaster (AP)

TOKYO ? Japan's Emperor Akihito praised the compassion of a nation striving to overcome the earthquake and tsunami disasters, as he waved from his palace balcony to throngs of well-wishers for his 78th birthday Friday.

Akihito expressed gratitude to all who have worked in the aftermath of the March 11 earthquake and tsunami, which devastated northeastern Japan and left 20,000 people dead or missing. Those he thanked included military personnel, residents of northeastern Japan, volunteers, workers at a hobbled nuclear plant and overseas contributors to relief efforts.

"Looking back on this year, I must say this has been a truly distressing year, dominated by disasters," he said in a statement from the Imperial Household Agency.

"I feel that the Japanese people have come together as a nation to squarely face the disaster," said Akihito, smiling next to his wife, Empress Michiko, who was dressed in a pale beige dress.

He was accompanied by his two sons and their wives.

Akihito, the son of Hirohito ? who announced Japan's surrender after World War II ? said Japanese people have learned their lesson from history and have vowed never to go to war again. He urged everyone not to forget that lesson of peace, despite the passage of time.

Akihito was hospitalized last month for a fever and an infection, but appeared to be in good health. He said he felt better and thanked people for worrying about his health.

Akihito has three eligible male successors ? his two sons and a grandson.

Japan's emperor, revered as divine during the wartime years, now has a largely ceremonial function as a "symbol of the nation."

Ethicist: 18th century 'giant' should be buried (AP)

LONDON ? The skeleton of an 18th-century celebrity nicknamed the 'Irish Giant' should be removed from a museum and buried at sea in keeping with his last wishes, two experts have argued, reviving a debate about the ethics of handling human remains.

Writing in the British Medical Journal, medical ethicist Len Doyal and legal researcher Thomas Muinzer said there is no good scientific reason to display the skeleton of Charles Byrne, who died in 1783, and a strong moral case against it.

"What has been done cannot be undone but it can be morally rectified," the two men wrote. "Surely it is time to respect the memory and reputation of Byrne."

Byrne stood about 7 feet, 7 inches (2.3 meters) tall as a result of acromegaly, a condition caused when a tumor on the pituitary gland stimulates an excess of growth hormone.

He became a celebrity in 18th-century London as the star turn in a museum of curiosities but died aged just 22.

Despite Byrne's wish to be buried at sea, his body was purchased by pioneering surgeon and anatomist John Hunter, who often hired grave robbers to supply him with corpses. For two centuries Byrne's skeleton has been on display at the Royal College of Surgeons' Hunterian Museum in London.

Doyal, of London's Queen Mary University, and Muinzer, of Queen's University Belfast, said that while Byrne's skeleton had been of use to medical research, that was no reason to put it on public display.

"Moreover, now that Byrne's DNA has been extracted, it can be used in further research," they wrote.

The museum's director, Sam Alberti, conceded Thursday there was a "powerful moral argument" for respecting Byrne's wishes. But he said that was outweighed by the skeleton's continuing benefit to medical research.

"Patients with the condition today live long and much happier lives," Alberti said ? in part due to knowledge gleaned from Byrne's DNA.

Byrne's skeleton has helped scientists identify several dozen people in Ireland with the same genetic mutation ? all believed to be related to Byrne through a common ancestor.

One of them, Brendan Holland, says the skeleton should remain ? and he thinks Byrne would agree.

"What would his view be if he knew what we know now?" Holland said in a video for the British Medical Journal website. "He would almost certainly agree with my view that this is the right thing to do today."

Microsoft to Back Out of CES Following Show in January

Steve Ballmer CES

This will be Microsoft?s last year of high-profile appearances at CES in Las Vegas, according to a?post on The Official Microsoft Blog. The company has traditionally been at the helm of the show?s press events, with Bill Gates?and then his successor Steve Ballmer?delivering the kick-off keynote for almost two decades.

The blog post, written by Microsoft vice president of corporate communications Frank X. Shaw, explains that the company?s announcement schedule does not fall in line with the annual show, which will take place from January 10th to January 13th, 2012.

Shaw says Microsoft ?will continue to participate in CES as a great place to connect with partners and customers across the PC, phone and entertainment industries, but we won?t have a keynote or booth after this year.? The post also mentions the company?s recent developments, including updates on the Windows Phone front, as factors in deciding to transition away from its roll at CES now.

CEO Steve Ballmer is slated to give the keynote this year. We?ll have to sit tight to see what?s in store; we wouldn?t be surprised if Microsoft exited the CES limelight with a bang.

Update: According to Engadget, Msoft?s final keynote will be on the tame side, with Ballmer focusing on two tried-and-true topics: Windows Phone and Xbox.

The Russian Winter: Putin Goes Prophylactic with the Protests (Time.com)

Earlier this month, Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said he was casually watching television when a strange scene came on the news. There were lots of his fellow citizens in the streets, and many of them had something long and white pinned to their chests. "It's impolite to say it, but I'll be honest," Putin recalled on Thursday, during a live call-in show with the Russian public. "I decided it was propaganda against AIDS, that these were, pardon me, dangling contraceptives." In fact, what was hanging from people's clothing was a white ribbon, the symbol of what is being called the "snowy revolution" against Putin's rule. But in his version of events, he hadn't heard about it. "I didn't really get it," Putin said. In particular, he didn't get why people had unrolled the condom before pinning it to their chests. "But on the whole, my first thought was that this is good, that people are fighting for a healthy lifestyle." Then Putin looked around at the studio audience, expecting someone to laugh.

Nobody did. "Some people were outright offended, others thought it was in very bad taste," says Nikolai Zlobin, a political analyst who was sitting in the studio with Putin. In the Russian language, the word gandon (condom) is an especially crass and juvenile insult, most often heard among boys too young to know the intricacies of contraception. But as far as anyone could tell, this was Putin's message to the people watching at home -- in particular, to the thousands of citizens who have donned white ribbons in the past week as a sign of solidarity and protest. As many of them quickly pointed out on Twitter, Putin seemed to be telling the ranks of his opponents that they are all a bunch of dangling condoms. (PHOTOS: Vladimir Putin: Action Figure)

That became more and more clear as the nearly five-hour call-in show progressed. Putin was hit with one question after another about the parliamentary elections held on Dec. 4, which his political party is accused of rigging, and about the subsequent wave of demonstrations, which have been the largest ever against Putin's rule. At one point, about an hour into the show, the moderator actually apologized for the mass of questions on this one topic. "I'm not doing it on purpose," he said, "there are just a whole lot of them." To which Putin responded, "I'm sick of your elections already, but alright."

As also became clear through the course of his performance, Putin seems to have made two basic calculations in the wake of this month's unrest. He has figured that the best way for him to get re-elected for a third term as president next year is to pick a fight with Washington, which he did with no holds barred. (Senator John McCain got the worst of it. "Mr. McCain famously fought in Vietnam," Putin said. "I think he has enough civilian blood on his hands.") This is a predictable ploy in Russian politics, where Cold War prejudices still shape the views of many voters. According to the most recent survey by the Levada Center, 73% of respondents said last year that the U.S. is "an aggressor trying to take control of all the countries of the world." That is the constituency Putin targeted on Thursday when he said, "America does not need allies, it needs vassals." (PHOTOS: Protests and Counterprotests in Russia)

His other calculation had to do with the size of the demographic now turning against him -- the young, urban middle-class voters, who have packed demonstrations this month across the country. Judging by Putin's statements during the call-in show, they are not a large enough segment of society to deserve much more than his contempt, which he served up abundantly. At one point, he claimed that one of the slogans shouted from the stage during the Dec. 10 protest in Moscow -- the biggest so far, with up to 50,000 people in attendance -- was "Sheep, forward!" Not only was this patently false, but it amounted to another insult: The word sheep in Russian is roughly equivalent to jackass.

For Russia's scattered opposition groups, all of these slights felt like a blessing in disguise. "Now all we have to do to get people out on the streets is remind them of Putin's insults," said Ilya Ponomaryov, the parliamentary deputy who has been organizing the biggest demonstrations in Moscow. As Ponomaryov also pointed out, Putin did offer the opposition a few olive branches, although one had to search for them between the lines. For one thing, Putin said he would consider gradually allowing Russians to elect their own governors. The Kremlin has appointed them since 2004. He also said he would allow more political parties to participate in elections, and most surprisingly, he would consider freeing one of his enemies, Mikhail Khodorkovsky, the oil mogul who was imprisoned in 2004 after challenging Putin in politics. "He can't admit these are concessions, because that would be like admitting defeat," said Ponomaryov. "But there is no other way to understand them." (See "Occupy the Kremlin: Russia's Election Lets Loose Public Rage.")

As for the main demand of the opposition -- the annulment of this month's allegedly rigged parliamentary elections -- Putin showed no sign of budging. "For me, it is clear that the attacks against these elections, which have already taken place, are secondary," Putin said. "The primary goal is the next election, the election of the President of the Russian Federation." Those will take place in less than three months, on March 4, when Putin will need to extend his mandate for another six years. His only goal between now and then will be to win those elections at any price, "to win them in the first round of voting with a clear sense of legitimacy and without any ballot-box stuffing," said Zlobin, the political analyst. To that end, he proposed during the call-in show to install web cameras in all of the polling stations. "Let the country watch!" he declared. But that alone won't save his approval ratings, which dropped to a historical low of 44% last weekend, according to the state-run pollster FOM. On Dec. 24, the opposition plans to hold another wave of rallies around the country, demanding a new parliamentary vote. While Putin addressed the nation on Thursday, another 3,000 people said on Facebook that they would attend the protest in Moscow. The total now, thanks partly to Putin's condom joke, is 23,000 people.

Pa. family with no utilities due to mine methane (AP)

RUSSELLTON, Pa. ? A western Pennsylvania family has been living with no natural gas service as a precaution while the state Department of Environmental Protection tries to curb methane leaking near their home from an abandoned mine.

Ashley and Luke Raynovich live in West Deer Township, with their two children, about 20 miles northeast of Pittsburgh. The DEP ordered their gas service shut off on Tuesday after elevated levels of methane were found within four feet of the couple's home. State regulations require gas service be shut off as a precaution whenever elevated methane levels are detected within 10 feet of a home.

The couple is staying in the home and using space heaters while the DEP figures out a way to vent to methane from their property and locate the abandoned mine's owner.

Sale of Lethal Injection Drug Sodium Thiopental to Be Restricted in Europe (Time.com)

This post is in partnership with Worldcrunch, a new global-news site that translates stories of note in foreign languages into English. The article below was originally published in S?ddeutsche Zeitung.

(BERLIN) -- The European Union is set to restrict the sale to the United States of one of the main active substances needed for lethal injections. According to information obtained by the S?ddeutsche Zeitung, the export of sodium thiopental will only be possible by special permission, beginning Friday, posing a major problem for the US justice system.

The Official Journal of the European Union (OJ) is to publish a new, uniform set of authorized export regulations, valid for all short or intermediate-acting barbituric acids. One of them is the easy-to-use and fast-working anesthetic sodium thiopental, which is used to execute criminals in the states of Ohio and Washington. In 33 other states, sodium thiopental is a key ingredient in other toxic cocktails used to kill inmates. (See TIME's 10 Biggest U.S. News Stories of 2011.)

Approximately 100 people are executed by American authorities every year. But in the past few months, supplies of the drug have become scarce. The only manufacturer based in the US, Hospira, is unwilling to continue to make its product available for lethal injections, and under American law it is not allowed to simply change the injection "recipe." To do that, a complicated approval procedure is required. So authorities -- who have been postponing executions as a result of the difficulty in finding supplies -- have been seeking other sources such as those in the EU.

Anti-death penalty and other human rights groups have pushed for the EU decision to now require special permission to export to countries outside of Europe. The most prominent supporter of the move is Germany's Minister of Economy and head of the Free Democratic Party (FDP), Philipp R?sler. In an earlier role as Minister of Health he had written to German manufacturers of sodium thiopental to encourage them not to sell the drug to the US.

After changing jobs, he introduced to the Commission a bill to create a regulation valid Europe-wide that would effectively prevent the export of thiopental to the US. Initially, the proposal met with resistance from other states, but it has now been approved by the majority of the 27 member states.

GOP's Paul Ryan has a new plan for Medicare (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan says he has a new plan for Medicare. This time his co-author is Democratic Sen. Ron Wyden of Oregon.

The top Republican budget writer in the House created a stir this year with a financial plan that essentially privatized Medicare for future retirees. The Senate rejected it after a backlash. Democrats want to use that plan against Republicans in 2012.

The new Wyden-Ryan plan would keep traditional Medicare as an option for future retirees and leave the eligibility age at 65. But it also sets up a regulated competition with private insurance. Seniors in private plans would get a fixed payment from the government that's more generous than in Ryan's original plan.

Wyden and Ryan say they want to start a bipartisan dialogue on Medicare.

Worst CEOs of 2011: Netflix's Reed Hastings Tops ... - Yahoo! Finance

Follow Yahoo!'s The Daily Ticker on Facebook here!

The CEOs of Netflix, Research in Motion and H-P all have one thing in common as the year comes to a close. They top the list of worst CEOs for 2011 for their general negligence towards customers and the resulting shock to shareholders, according to Syd Finkelstein, professor of management at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth and author of Why Smart Executives Fail.

In the accompany segment, Finkelstein joins The Daily Ticker's Aaron Task to discuss, or rehash, where Reed Hastings of Netflix, Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie of Research in Motion and Leo Apotheker all went wrong this past year.

Netflix: Reed Hastings

Netflix, once a red-hot stock, has lost nearly 60% of its market value since the beginning of 2011. The company's dramatic decline is due in large part to the mistakes made by CEO Reed Hastings who followed a "textbook strategy" on how to handle a core business in a downtrend, says Finkelstein.

In September, Hastings announced Netflix would split its struggling DVD mail-delivery business from its booming online streaming business and raise prices at the same time. (See: With All Respect To Reed Hastings, The Netflix-Qwikster Split Bad For Customers)

Customers were confused by the breakup and outraged by the price hikes. As a result of the changes and price increases, the company lost nearly 800,000 subscribers in the third quarter. (See: A "Spectacular Collapse": Netflix Loses 800,000 Subscribers, Stock Plunges 35%)

After such intense backlash, Hastings issued an apology to customers and announced the company's plan to backtrack on the decision to split the company.

"I messed up. I owe everyone an explanation," he wrote on the company's website. "It is clear that for many of our members two websites would make things more difficult, so we are going to keep Netflix as one place to go for streaming and DVDs." (See: Netflix Backtracks ? Abruptly Cancels Plan To Spin Off DVD Business)

So are Netflix's best days behind it?

It is hard to tell right now, says Finkelstein, but what is certain are the two key problems facing the company:

1) Growing competition from companies like Amazon and Google and

2) Rising licensing fees for the movies they hope to rent and stream.

Research in Motion: Co-CEOs Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie

It's been years since Research in Motion was the little darling on Wall Street. But this year was particularly bad for RIM's co-CEOs Mike Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie.

"What went right for them this year?" asks Finkelstein. "Anybody who has a BlackBerry knows exactly what [I'm] talking about."

If you don't have a BlackBerry, he is referring to the largest service outage the company has ever experienced in October, which hit customers across the globe.

On top of the outages, Finkelstein says the CEOs spent more time looking for an NHL franchise to buy than caring about the competition from Apple's iPhone and Google's android phones, which have been negatively impacting BlackBerry sales.

RIM, like Netflix, also lost more than half its market value in 2011, and is now the subject of takeover rumors. (See: Palm 2.0? Research In Motion Tumbles After Another Lousy Quarter)

So is RIM at risk of a terminal decline?

"It is hard to say it's 'terminal'" because they do have a lot of loyalty from the corporate world, says Finkelstein. "But they haven't adapted and they haven't changed and .... slowly but surely the iPhone and Android are taking away [their market] share."

Leo Apotheker, former CEO H-P

Leo Apotheker was one of the shortest-lived CEOs and yet he still managed to make the list of worst chief executives for 2011.

Apotheker only donned the CEO moniker of H-P for 11 months, but during that time he missed financial targets and couldn't figure out whether the company was selling or keeping the consumer PC business, says Finkelstein.

Since the the firing of Apotheker, H-P's board has hired former eBay CEO Meg Whitman. (See: HP's Implosion Continues: Hapless Board Prepares To Fire CEO, Hire Meg Whitman)

But the icing on the cake is Apotheker's reward for failing at his job. His good-bye package totals upwards of $25 million, according to Footnoted.com's Michelle Leder, and includes $7.2 million in severance pay, 156,000 shares of accelerated vesting stock, another 424,000 in performance shares, a $2.4 million bonus and money to relocate his family back to Europe. (See: Another Corporate Outrage: 'Golden Parachutes' for Failed CEOs)

Like Netflix and RIM, H-P's stock lost about 50% of its value in 2011.

Thousands protest against Putin after Russia vote (Reuters)

MOSCOW (Reuters) ? Several thousand people protested in central Moscow on Monday against what they said was a fraudulent parliamentary election, shouting "Revolution!" and calling for an end to Prime Minister Vladimir Putin's rule.

The protest, a day after an election in which Russians sharply reduced the parliamentary majority held by Putin's United Russia party, appeared to be one of the biggest opposition demonstrations in Russia in years.

Protesters initially gathered in the rain on a tree-lined boulevard where they had permission for a rally. They denounced the vote as shameful and shouted "Russia without Putin!"

Many protesters then tried to march out onto a major street and were confronted by a chain of police officers who locked elbows and divided the surging crowd into two parts. Several people were detained in the area.

Several dozen protesters managed to break through or circle around the police and marched toward the Kremlin. Police detained at least 30 near the Kremlin and bundled them into buses.

Harvey Nicols Walk Of Shame Ad Makes Stumbling Home In The Morning Look Lovely (VIDEO)

You know what would make your next Walk of Shame better? A smart little cocktail dress from Harvey Nichols -- and some lovely background music.

Harvey Nichols has decided to promote its Christmas wares in the form of a faux PSA. The tagline? "Avoid the Walk of Shame this season."

The British retailer shows woefully familiar shots of gals toddling home in the wee hours of the morning, wearing their metallic mini dresses from the night before, with one even carrying her shoes in her hand (the Barefoot Walk of Shame -- is there anything worse?).

Yet with shots that look like they were taken on Instagram and tinkling piano playing throughout, the Walk of Shame doesn't seem that bad. As long as we're wearing a cute Harvey Nichols frock, of course.

Will the BlackBerry PlayBook Be the Next $99 Tablet? (ContributorNetwork)

"Amateur hour is over," RIM's BlackBerry PlayBook marketing read, in an obvious jab at the Apple iPad. But RIM has had to write off $485 million in unsold PlayBooks, according to a December 2 press release, an amount that Morgan Stanley analyst Ehud Gelblum estimates amounts to roughly 1.4 million tablets.

RIM's sales didn't even allow it to make the top 5 (non-Apple) tablet brands in the United States, in a $99 fire sale.

Is the PlayBook next?

RIM hasn't said that a last-ditch fire sale is on the agenda. But the press release does say that "an increase in promotional activity is required to drive sell-through to end customers," and attributes "a significant increase in demand for the PlayBook" to its earlier promotions.

According to Trevor Mogg of Digital Trends, these promotions have included a half-off holiday sale from Best Buy; a buy-two-get-one-free sale for business customers; and a free BlackBerry PlayBook for companies that upgrade to version 5 of the BlackBerry Enterprise Server. Future promotions are likely to target businesses first and foremost, but the number of PlayBooks in retail sales channels suggest that more sale prices might be in the works.

What went wrong for the PlayBook?

The same thing that went wrong for every tablet other than the iPad: People bought the iPad instead. And while Barnes and Noble and Amazon.com have seen success by selling half-price, e-reader tablets tied into each bookseller's marketplace, most non-iPad tablets are so outwardly similar to the iPad that Apple is suing some manufacturers for infringement.

RIM tried to position the PlayBook as a more "professional" tablet than the iPad, but its contradictory marketing emphasized its ability to play Flash video at the same time as HD games like Need for Speed. App developers were turned off by poor developer tool quality and RIM's needlessly stringent requirements for its developers -- so strict, compared to Apple's and Google's, that they were lampooned in an open letter by Jamie Murai called "You Win, RIM!" And even BlackBerry fans quickly found that the PlayBook's built-in email client would only work if a BlackBerry smartphone was attached.

How to get rid of 1.4 million BlackBerry PlayBooks?

Someone at RIM is probably asking themselves that question right now. For now, RIM's press release just says that it will " expand upon the aggressive level of promotional activity recently employed by the Company".

Asthma rates double for WTC first responders

GREAT NECK, NY -- The American Journal of Industrial Medicine recently published a study showing that World Trade Center (WTC) responders suffer from asthma at more than twice the rate of the general U.S. population as a result of their exposure to the toxic dust from the collapse of the WTC towers in 2001. Preliminary study results were previously presented in CHEST in 2009.

Past studies have documented high rates of asthma symptoms among WTC responders. However, a comparison of these increased rates of asthma among responders to the general population has never been done before. This is the first study to directly quantify the magnitude of asthma among WTC responders, said Hyun Kim, MD, epidemiologist and assistant professor of population health at the North Shore-LIJ Health System and the Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine, and first author of the study, published online on November 8. This epidemic of asthma among WTC responders started right after the 9/11 disaster and we are still observing elevated rates of asthma in this population. It is critical to keep monitoring responders health and provide proper treatment, Dr. Kim said.

The study population consisted of a prospective cohort of 20,834 responders who received medical screenings from July 2002 to December 2007 at the WTC Medical Monitoring and Treatment Program. Researchers compared the results with the US National Health Survey Interviews adult sample data for the years 2000, and 2002 to 2007. World Trade Center-related data were collected by researchers at the Data and Coordination Center at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine.

Eighty-six percent of WTC responders in this study population were men and the average duration of work at the WTC sites was 80 days. Forty-two percent of study participants were uniformed and other law enforcement and protective service workers. Other occupations of responders consisted of construction workers, installation, maintenance and repair workers, along with transportation and material moving workers, who were essential to service restoration and/or debris removal and clean-up efforts.

When looking at asthma symptoms and attacks that have occurred in the past 12 months, researchers found that 6.3 percent of WTC responders reported asthma symptoms or attacks, while only 3.7 percent of the U.S. general population reported asthma symptoms or attacks. The asthma rates remained stable among the general population during the entire period, but there were large increases in 12-month asthma rates among WTC responders from 2000 to 2005. When comparing asthma rates of WTC responders in 2000 (one year before 9/11) to 2005, the 12-month asthma rate increased by 40 times. Furthermore, when comparing 2002 (one year after 9/11) to 2005, the 12-month asthma rate doubled among WTC responders.

This study is the first to compare rates of disease among WTC responders to the U.S. general population, says Jacqueline Moline, MD, vice president and chair of the Department of Population Health at North Shore-LIJ Health System and the Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine, and director of the Queens WTC Clinical Center of Excellence at Long Island Jewish Medical Center/Queens College, and the results show that WTC responders have higher rates of asthma than the general population. This reinforces the fact that continued surveillance is critical to avoid permanent lung damage and other irreversible illnesses among the WTC responder population.
